Panama's colonial past allows it to have a rich history full of sailing boats, Spaniards, and privateers. Though these days evidences of these expeditions from Europe are not that very obvious, certain cities in Panama allow this history to be kept very well in-tact. What could be more popular in this regard than the now-sleepy city of Portobello, a port city located north of Colon province. Portobello was established in the late 16th century by Spanish explorers and turned it into one of the most important cities in the region during the time. Between the 16 and 18th centuries, Portobello served as an important port that exported silver to the New Grenada. Portobello was an important component of the Spanish treasure trails back in those years. The city was heavily fortified owing its importance in Spanish trade, but it was also heavily fortified due to the Spaniards worry that the English are trying to weaken their powers in the lower Caribbean by conquering these ports, including Portobello, which they did conquer in 1739, only to be reclaimed by the Spaniards two years later. Despite the initial success of the English at capturing Portobello, the English did not succeed at all at gaining ground in Latin America. Fort Santiago, the fortress established in the city by the Spaniards, used to be one of the strongest fortresses created in the old Spanish Empire. Interestingly, after so many years, the residents of the tiny and sleepy seaside town remains in there. With a good historian at your side, you could go on and on and discuss the many intricate details about the well-talked about history of the Portobello. Trips that go on and allow you to have a taste of history is something that I always prefer. For this reason, I recommend a trip to Portobello even for just a day. As they say, you won't be able to effectively decide on future matters when you don't know anything about history. You can talk about...
