For all its worth, Panama City's Barrio Chino remains as the official Chinese neighborhood within the confines of Panama's capital city. It has still managed to maintain its identity, with all the shops and stores selling Chinese goods. But for quite some time, it is also noticeable that a large part of this neighborhood is already disappearing. To where, you ask? The locals say it's in El Dorado.
It's ironic that such a neighborhood is now considered as an unofficial Chinatown in Panama City. After all, El Dorado got its name from the old myths spread around by the Spanish colonizers of the previous centuries. But name is nothing for the El Dorado boasts a new Chinese shop or restaurant that you have to check out for yourself everytime you go there. Of course, whenever you are in a Chinatown of sorts, one of the things that you have to see are the restaurants. Our friend here from The Panama News tell us in detail his experience with Restaurante California, a Chinese-styled restaurant that is most likely based on those restos you see in the Chinatown in California. Oysters, wontons, spring rolls, and such--a very typical Chinese lunch in a Chinese-American restaurant. The author had to pay around $18 for the lunch, which is just fair enough for the food he managed to eat. Aside from the food, one thing that you gotta notice about El Dorado is the nearby Metropolitan Park, a 232-hectare protected rainforest that serves much like the lungs of the city. In a city where modernization is already inevitable, having a space around where there's still preserved forests and wildlife is always welcome. For someone like me who's very interested in Chinese culture, a suburb like El Dorado is definitely a place to be. It's interesting how the persuasive culture of the Chinese were able to mix together with the local Panamanians. You can talk about...
