Panama Expat and TravelPanama City's Summit Botanical Gardens
Do you enjoy a weekend at a park, admiring the plants, flowers, and animals present in that green space? I personally do. Nothing beats this kind of weekend to end a week of hard work. Here in Panama City, green spaces like botanical gardens are never left out, with the Summit Botanical Gardens in Panama City serving as a favorite among locals and tourists alike.
The garden had its root in 1923, when it was created by the US government as the Summit Center of Introduction and Propagation of Species. The goal of the program was to introduce and propagate species of tropical plants found in Panama and in neighboring countries. In 1929, it was renamed to the Experimental Garden in the Canal Zone, only to add in animal species for the first time in 1962. It was only in 1979 when ownership was finally transferred to the Panamanian government and renamed in 1985 to its name today. Once inside, you will be able to see over 40 species of animals and over 150 species of plants that can be seen all over Panama. A lot of these plants and animals are endemic in Panama. This means that this is the only place in the world where you can see them. A lot of animals are also considered to be endangered species. This includes the Harpy eagle, Panama's national bird, which is protected within the park's grounds. Protecting endangered animals is among the important duties that this park has to play. On top of this, there's also a tree nursery where the park takes care of young trees until they are ready to get sold to the public. If you want to plant a tree in your own backyard, a visit to the Summit is a must. Entrance rates to the botanical gardens are cheap. It is about $1 for adults an $0.50 for children and retirees.
